Yet another update (hopefully the last):
The White House only confirms five tests. Presumably the second TD-2 test was a bad call by CNN.
Update 5: Macsmind:
UPDATE: Per Fox - North Korea isn’t done yet. Reports coming in that a couple of more Scuds and another Taepodong-2 have been launched. That makes a total of six launches, the latter TD-2 at 6:31 EST. At this point I’m backing off the rubber dumming, looks more like preliminary testing of the rockets to get the delivery correct. That decidedly hightens the urgency.
Update 4: ABC is told by Tony Snow that there were only three missiles, one of which was the failed Taepodong.
Update 3: ABC is reporting four mid-range missiles were fired!
It is still unclear as to whether one missile was long range or not. Conflicting reports are coming in. NORAD is saying 4 scuds… plus the long range… but they aren’t sure about the long range one according to Fox.
Fox reports that the Taepodong failed 40 seconds after launch and that John Bolton is “urgently consulting” with UNSC members.
Update 2: A third Missile has been launched!
Major provocation: CNN hears from the State Department that they’ve launched the third missile — the Taepodong ICBM, capable of reaching America. Apparently there was some mechanical problem and it failed in mid-air; no details yet. The UN Security Council may convene tonight.
CNN says the timing wasn’t coincidental.
The senior State Department official said the launches were timed to coincide with the launch of the space shuttle Discovery from Florida, calling it “a provocative act designed to get attention.”…
Two senior State Department officials said Tuesday that fuel trucks had departed the site where the Taepodong-2 sat on a launch paid, indicating that a test may have been near.
Update: A second missile has been fired!!! Two missiles have been fired according to Norad! CNN thinks the second missile was also short-range.
Reports are coming in….Drudge Report has the siren up. The story is developing that North Korea has test lauched a missile. More to come.
CNN reporting: It is not the long range weapon we have been monitoring.
North Korea test launched a missile early Wednesday morning that landed in the Sea of Japan, Japanese media reported.
North Korea launched the missile at 0332 Japan Time and it crashed into the Sea of Japan several minutes later, public broadcaster NHK reported.
NHK said Japanese government officials were trying to determine whether the missile was a long-range ballistic missile that had been readied for launch recently, or whether it was a different missile.
A Blog For All linked with Rockets Red GlareNorth Korea tested a short-range missile early Wednesday but has not fired the long-range Taepodong-2 rocket Western observers suspect has been readied for launch, U.S. sources told CNN.
