Henry Ford and Thomas Edison refused to hire smokers almost a century ago. So do I. I don't want to pay for their increased health costs and their terrible work habits. Look outside any building in New York and you will see, in the worst of weather, employees sucking on their butts, wasting time. They have to stop work, get out of the office, go down the elevator, and step outside to puff away at their 6 buck a pack addiction. I don't want my workers looking at the clock every 30 minutes waiting for their next cigarette break. In fact, I don't want my employees looking at a clock at all. My employees eat lunch a few minutes after it arrives so there is no purpose to have a clock in the office. They can set the alarm on their cellphones and get notified when it is time to go home. I caught an employee leaving the building once and found her smoking. Once.

When I say I hire only non-smokers, I don't mean a person who doesn't smoke on the job, I mean a person who doesn't smoke at all. Off-the-job conduct such as smoking not only sets a bad moral example but also leads to adverse on-job impacts, including lower efficiency and productivity, more sickness, higher accident rate, increased danger to self and co-workers, and higher health costs."

If the Ford Motor Company ever builds their new plant, they should certainly hire only non-smokers. They will at least then have some competitive parity with the Japanese automakers in terms of health-care costs and productivity.
