One thing that seasoned standup comedians learn is how to handle hecklers. If this were not Michael Richards it would have simply been ignored as an out-of-control rant by an unknown comic.
Michael Richards said Monday he lost his cool during a stand-up comedy routine and went on an N-Word rant while responding to black hecklers and not because he's a bigot.
"For me to be at a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry,” the former Seinfeld co-star said during a satellite appearance for David Letterman's Late Show in New York.

I do not condone Richards' reaction but the actual victim here is not the black hecklers but society. We are subjected to rudeness and incivility from black youth everywhere. I work a block away from a school that has about 50% blacks. When I go to the nearby deli I have to wade through f* this and f* that in what passes for punctuation marks for these youngsters. I find myself asking them to please not use profanity while I wait in line to pay for my grilled chicken sandwich. 13 year old black girls talk n*gger this and n*gger that, f*ck him and f*ck her, I ain't this and I ain't that. I don't know who is the subject or what is the predicate in any of these conversations. Precisely what is being taught in school and how do parents tolerate their children speaking like this?
Michael Richards needed to apologize, but what we as a society need is for all these black leaders who are so offended by his outburst to apologize for the uncivilized behaviour of so many young black men and women. Black leaders stir and inflame racial hatred in this country. It is no wonder that young blacks walk around with an attitude of "I can talk shit around white people" and act so disrespectfully around adults. So before they go around asking for respect perhaps they should act like they deserve respect.
