Seymour Hersh is an Idiot

I said it, he's not just an an idiot, he's a useful idiot. On the Bill Maher Show this week (onegoodmove.org has the video), Seymour Hersh said that Bush and Cheney believe that if Iran gets nuclear weapons they will give it to Hezbollah and Hezbollah will bring it to America and blow up American cities. Hersh said this as if Iran is decades away from having a bomb, if ever, and that Cheney's belief that Hezbollah has cells in America is overblown or baseless.

It's a shame that Bill Maher is also a useful idiot, otherwise it would have been instructive to hear Seymour's response if he were asked, "Do you actually believe that Hezbollah does not have cells in America? Or if it does, is it your opinion they would never think of attacking America with nuclear material?"

Much of his interview with Maher was a rehash of nonsense from his more detailed article two weeks ago in the New Yorker:

5 Mar 2007, THE REDIRECTION

In the past few months, as the situation in Iraq has deteriorated, the Bush Administration, in both its public diplomacy and its covert operations, has significantly shifted its Middle East strategy. The "redirection,” as some inside the White House have called the new strategy, has brought the United States closer to an open confrontation with Iran and, in parts of the region, propelled it into a widening sectarian conflict between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.

Hersh must be a complete idiot. There are only two groups: Sunnis and Shiites. Both have extremists in their midst. If we instead supported Shiites to fight al-Qaeda, idiot Hersh would be yelling about our indirectly supporting Hezbollah, and he would be lecturing us that we face danger from Hezbollah bringing nuclear bombs into the US. I have no doubt he would be taking exactly the opposite position to our administration no matter the facts. Didn't the US jointly fight the Nazis with the help of the Soviets during World War II? You didn't have to have a journalism degree to understand that we were making deals with the devil back then. Until Seymour Hersh graduates from a military academy we can ignore his suggestions on how we should conduct the war on terror and with whom we should be striking temporary alliances.

In a previous New Yorker article (21 Aug 2006) WATCHING LEBANON, Hersh wrote that the Israeli-Lebanon War was only a trial run for the US to see if Israel could learn anything of value that would help in a future US attack against Iran. Seems defeatist idiot Hersh has warned of an imminent US attack against Iran every year now for the past 3 years.

[think progress] 24 Feb 2007 Hersh: New Pentagon Unit Developing Contingency Plan To Bomb Iran

Hersh cannot stop warning about possible attacks:

New Yorker, 17 Apr 2006, Would President Bush go to war to stop Tehran from getting the bomb?

The Bush Administration, while publicly advocating diplomacy in order to stop Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon, has increased clandestine activities inside Iran and intensified planning for a possible major air attack. Current and former American military and intelligence officials said that Air Force planning groups are drawing up lists of targets, and teams of American combat troops have been ordered into Iran, under cover, to collect targeting data and to establish contact with anti-government ethnic-minority groups.

[CNN] 17 Jan 2005 - U.S. planning for possible attack on Iran, Excerpt: The Bush administration has been carrying out secret reconnaissance missions to learn about nuclear, chemical and missile sites in Iran in preparation for possible airstrikes there, journalist Seymour Hersh said Sunday.

If you listened to the show you would also have heard Hersh declaring that Hezbollah defeated Israel in the Israel-Lebanon War last summer. Yeah, they're no longer speaking Hebrew in Israel. What a maroon! Reasononline does a good job of dismantling this and other inane statements made by Hersh these past few years here.
