Forget About Valentine's Day - Let's Forget all Holidays
By Bernie on 13 Feb 2012
Muslims object to Valentine's Day for a number of reasons: women shouldn't be treated better than goats; expressing love outside of marriage is the work of Satan; exchanging cards may lead to hand-holding; Cupid is a pagan god; the day commemorates a person of that name who took part in planning and attacking Cordoba, the center of Islam in Moorish Iberia; it is a non-Muslim tradition and therefore filthy and corrupting; the purpose of the day is to spread love among believer and unbeliever and therefore haraam since it is forbidden to love the kaafirs (kaafir means filthy unbeliever); and other reasons.
One of those other reasons is the objection that one should not just show love on one day but rather everyday and so the holiday is superfluous.
However, one can say the very same thing about all holidays. Consider Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during daylight hours in order to learn about patience, spirituality, humility and submissiveness to God. But shouldn't we refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during daylight hours every day, every month to insure that we definitely learn the lesson?
What about wedding anniversaries? Why should spouses exchange gifts on only one day to celebrate their wedding day? If marriage is such a wonderful thing, the wedding day should be celebrated every day.
Let's not forget birthdays - if being born is such a great thing to commemorate, it should be celebrated every day, not just once a year. Hey, I'm alive, let's light a few candles and eat cake!
Muslim are so silly, if we listen to them, there won't be any holidays to have fun or glorify the joys of being human. In this regard Muslims can learn a lot from the Jews. While Jews may have holidays that recall unpleasant events in history: the burdens of slavery under Pharaoh, their oppression under Greek rule, their near extermination in Persia; the celebrations are not somber. The Jewish attitude is: "They tried to kill us - we survived - let's eat."
Valentine's Day is not a pagan or Christian holiday. It might have been once long ago, but Christians, Jews, Hindus, and even Atheists can exchange Valentines tomorrow. If I give my wife a Valentine's gift tomorrow to express my love it doesn't mean I don't love her on February 15th or March 15th (which happens to be the day after Valentines Day for Men) or any other day.
