High Fashion in the Mosque

Reader A.L. sent me the following email to get my take on it. It's on thousands of websites and repeated with little additional comment. First let us read the piece and then I'll give my opinion of it:

High Fashion in the Mosque

9/11 shirtWe're constantly clubbed on the head with the claim that the Muslim world condemns 9/11, abhors 9/11, etc. - Yet every day Shirts like this are mass produced, marketed, and sold by street venders thru out the Middle East and it's simply OK. The mass-murder of 9-11 is a celebrated event by millions of people.

Now a few of our military guys, after months of sleeping on the cold ground, eating MREs, not having a good hot shower, and away from their love ones, get caught peeing on a couple of dead Al Qada types, and they are condemned by the world. What they did wasn't right, but the huge outpouring of condemnation doesn't compare (in my mind) to someone who would wear a shirt like this that glorifies the murder of over 3,000 innocent Americans.

Here are some of my observations:

  1. This is not the Middle East, it's India.

  2. There's nothing to indicate he is a Muslim.

  3. Even if he were Muslim, perhaps the shirt means to condemn 9/11 - perhaps the back says, "Let's never forget."

  4. Even if he were Muslim, all this photo means is that there is at least one clueless idiot in the world. There may be millions of Muslims who celebrate the event but this photo hardly indicates that.

  5. Even if he were Muslim, the majority of young Muslims have no clue what happened on that day 1 and moreover, I doubt this fellow even knows how to add the numbers 9 and 11 together.

  6. Even if he were Muslim and purposely celebrating the tragedy of 9/11, so what? It doesn't bother me that he's expressing his view peacefully. What bothers me are Muslims who go around trying to change the way we live.

  7. I don't see any mosque.

FoxNews, Survey Reveals 92 Percent of Young Afghan Men Have Never Heard of 9/11

More than 90 per cent of young Afghan men in southern provinces home to sustained fighting between U.S. and Taliban forces do not know about "this event which the foreigners call 9/11," The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

According to a survey of 1,000 15 to 30-year-old men in Kandahar and Helmand -- where U.S. President Barack Obama sent the bulk of American surge troops -- 92 percent of respondents said they were unaware of 9/11 after being read a three-paragraph description of the attacks.

"Nobody explained to them the 9/11 story -- and it's hard to win the hearts and minds of the fighting-age males in Helmand if they don't even know why the foreigners are here," said Norine MacDonald, president of the International Council on Security and Development, which conducted the survey.
