Every 100,000 years the Earth goes into an Ice Age, see graph, and it seems over the next 30 or 40,000 years we will most likely go into another Ice Age unless... Unless we continue to build up greenhouse gases and counteract any lowering of future temperatures. So it could well be that we invite catastrophe if the US agrees to cap future emissions.
So Al Gore's medicine for the world could very likely be a prescription for disaster:

Amid deadlock in Bali, EU threatens to boycott climate talks in U.S.
NUSA DUA, Indonesia: Frustrated with the U.S. position in deadlocked negotiations at a United Nations conference on global warming, the European Union threatened Thursday to boycott separate talks that are to be held by the United States next month.
The escalating bitterness between the EU and United States came as Al Gore, the former U.S. vice president, told delegates that "my own country, the United States, is principally responsible for obstructing progress here in Bali."
The United States and the EU are at odds on many points, including whether an agreement signed here should include numerical targets, a move opposed by the United States and a few other countries, including Russia. The emerging economic powers, most notably China and India, also refuse to accept limits on their emissions, despite projections that they will soon become the dominant source of the gases.
I do agree that the US is the main cause of global warming but it is not through the emission of CO2 but rather from the emission of these hot bodies (click on any panel for larger, NSFW view):
