Black Unemployment

For as long as Bureau of Labor Statistics has been keeping monthly unemployment rates, Black unemployment has consistently been about twice that of whites (1). That is to say, that since the War on Poverty began, employment for Blacks has not improved. Indeed, liberal policies have kept Blacks poor, ignorant, and unemployed for the past two generations (2).

But how bad is it really? In New York City in 2003, nearly half of all African-American men did not have jobs. By comparison, 75.7 percent of white men in New York held jobs that year (3).

As usual, liberal idiots blame the problem on everything and anyone except Blacks themselves; for example, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) points to failing schools, racism, and the decimation of manufacturing jobs as the causes of high unemployment among Blacks (4).

So let's consider these three items:

  1. The truth is: if a school is failing it is because it is filled with failing Blacks. Many Black youth avoid being studious for fear of "acting white" (5).

  2. The truth is: if there is racism it is almost entirely against whites not Blacks (6). Before any of my readers mention the Devah Pager study which found a persistent and deep racial discrimination in the workplace (7), let me say that the discrimination is about smarts not race. As an employer (of highly skilled computer programmers) I find Russian, Hindu and Chinese candidates to be better educated than the average white American candidate. Do I hire more "foreigners" than white Americans? Yes. Is it racial discrimination? No.

I happen to hire more whites than Blacks. Know why? Because the whites I interviewed are more qualified. Should 13% of my employees be Black because that matches their demographic percentage? I'll do that as soon as the NBA hires only 13% Black players.

But if employers supposedly discriminate in favor of their own race, as the Pager study wrongly suggests, then why has Hispanic job growth outpaced that of whites (8)? I'll tell you why, because employers hire those who they think are best qualified for the job.

  3. The truth is: the decimation of manufacturing jobs has nothing to do with Black unemployment. We might as well blame the decimation of farming jobs for Black unemployment since there are virtually no cotton-picking jobs left in this country.

While white liberals fail to pin the blame on their own failed policies such as welfare and affirmative action, some Blacks blame the lack of jobs on Hispanic immigrants (9). It's a sad day when uneducated, unskilled, illiterate, non-English speaking people take your job away. But if the perception among employers, both Black and white is that Blacks are lazy, shiftless, uneducated, violent criminals, then whose fault is that? Why have Black leaders spent the last few decades fomenting race hatred instead of spending their energies on improving the educational opportunities for Black youth?

When a Korean deli owner achieves financial success, he sponsors even more Koreans to open up businesses in America. When one Chinese takeout becomes successful in a Black area, in a short time those owners are helping dozens more of their own race to open up more businesses. But when a Black becomes successful, they forget their own. Oprah Winfrey could have opened up dozens of schools in America targeted to helping inner-city youth; but what did she do instead? She sent her money overseas. As I asked in my article Oprah should have helped US Blacks, "Why don't black celebrities help other blacks and why does Oprah open schools in Africa instead of Detroit?" I answered, "Because they have given up on black America."

Young Blacks are caught in a Catch-22: they can't get jobs because they don't have a good education, because they can't get jobs they turn to crime, because so many end up in prison they can't get jobs when they get out, because they father children just before going to prison, their children grow up in fatherless, poverty-racked households (you can't rightly call them homes); partly because of that environment, their children's educational opportunities are impacted negatively, then because of poor education and the high numbers of Blacks in prison and their lack of zeal in participating in "white" America, those children cycle through the exact same scenaro as their fathers.

Want to help blacks get out of the merry-go-round of ignorance, poverty, dependence and prison? Then don't cry to me about how racist this article is, write to your congressman to stop affirmative action, the War on Poverty, and any other dependency-producing program. Stopping the War on Drugs alone should keep a few million Blacks from entering prison.

I never owned slaves, I never lynched a Black man, and I refuse to accept blame for Black poverty and hopelessness. If I were Black, I would string up Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, et al., for keeping Blacks down. Blacks must stop blaming whitey for all their troubles, give up sucking on the government teat, and start pushing children to study - no matter what. Millions of immigrants came to America dirt poor, without English skills, and made something of themselves through education.

Make your children dress like human beings, teach them to respect everyone (including whites), stop glorifying Africa, and for God's Sake, stop giving your children Ebonic or Afro-centric names like Shaniqwa. If you want your daughter to get a job don't let her go to an interview looking like Buckwheat on steroids.

Hopefully, respect for education and others will reduce Black teen pregnancy rates, which is another cause of single-mother households. Kids born to these careless, stupid girls will seldom receive proper education or parental guidance or attention which only consigns them to more poverty and hopelessness.

To break this vicious cycle we may need to take drastic actions. Crack whores (Black or white) should be sterilized. Unwed teenagers (Black or white) should have their children removed to foster care. Being an orphan is better than growing up in a dysfunctional household. Government incentives to have many children should be eliminated. These are only a few.

We can do it now, when the remedies will work, or we can wait until it is too late to do anything at all.

By the way, if you are one of those Liberal Idiots who wish to keep insisting that the problem is racial discrimination, please be advised that Saint Kitts and Nevis, a Caribbean Island that is predominantly Black, has exactly the same problem of too many Black men in prisons just as we do here in America. However they at least acknowledge that the problem is one of education (10). Obviously racial discrimination does not play a part in that country.

The Black Commentator, 7 Feb 2008, More Bad News from the Job Market

"I wanted to compare national unemployment rates and African American unemployment rates today with national and African American unemployment rates from the past to see how much progress we have made," said the Rev. David Bryce, minister of the First Unitarian Society of Westchester, NY, in his Martin Luther King Day sermon January 20. "The Bureau of Labor Statistics has monthly unemployment rates going back to 1948, but black unemployment rates going back only to January 1972. I looked for the national unemployment rate of 5 percent as close to that as possible - because I wanted an exact match - and found it in February of 1973. The black unemployment rate then was 9.5 percent. Now, if we have made a lot of social progress, things should be dramatically different. In December, not quite thirty five years after the 1973 figures, the black unemployment rate was in fact, better, it was 9 percent. But I consider that to be only marginally better. Ironically, if you go to the nineteen eighties, things were actually worse. In March of 1989, when the national unemployment rate was at 5 percent, the rate in the black community was 11.1 percent.

"By the way, the white unemployment rate for this past December was 4 percent, less than half that of the level for African Americans. And that is about what it has been throughout the entire time that both white and black rates have been tracked. Black unemployment has stayed at just about double that of the white rate. By that measure, at least, nothing has changed."

Planck's Constant, 24 May 2009, The Pursuit of Happiness and Making Blacks Happier

Contrary to Liberal expectations (but not mine), the War on Poverty only made things worse, it discouraged blacks from obtaining education and job skills. Today, after almost 45 years of supposedly helping the poor, more children (17.4%) in America live below the poverty line than in 1969 (14%). That's right, Liberals have kept blacks in poverty for the past two generations. If President Johnson had only minded his own business, the economy would have been much better today than it is; blacks would have been encouraged to get a good education; certainly ACORN would not have existed: all of us, black, white, whatever, would be better off today.

BNET, 12 Aug 2004, The real deal on Black unemployment

Every month, when unemployment rate data are released, the news for African Americans is bleak. No matter what the overall unemployment rate is (5.6 percent in June), the Black unemployment rate is higher. Indeed, it is usually at least twice the White rate.

On its face, that data is bleak enough, and the 2:1 ratio has been steady in good times and in bad times. But a recent study from the Community Service Society of New York suggests that we look at a far more compelling statistic to get the real deal on Black unemployment.

The relevant statistic is the "employment population ratio," a figure that measures what percentage of the total population in a certain age group has employment. When the CSC measured the employment population ratio in New York City in 2003, they found that only 51.8 percent of African American men between 16 and 65 held jobs. That means that nearly half of all African American men did not have jobs. By comparison, 75.7 percent of White men in New York held jobs that year, meaning that fewer than one in four of them did not hold jobs.

BNET, Black males' Rampant Joblessness, high drop-out rate, incarceration dooming black community: study

Seven out of every 10 African-American children are born out of wedlock, according to testimony given by a leading social policy researcher during a Joint Economic Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

In what is being called "the nation's worst crisis in the history of the Black family," hearing participants attributed the degenerating situation to the particularly disturbing plight of young African-American men, half of whom are now unemployed, and have 30 percent chance of serving time in prison before age 30.

And among Black men who drop out of high school-which is estimated at 40 percent--the situation is worse. Of those, 72 percent are jobless, and the likelihood of being incarcerated jumps to 60 percent.

"These numbers take your breath away," committee chairman Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), said. "These numbers should cause national alarm and demand a national solution."

Schumer points to failing schools, racism, and the decimation of manufacturing jobs as the culprits that continue to suck the life out of the American dream for Blacks.

The solutions discussed at the hearing included the expansion of work training programs and the modernization of the Earned Income Tax Credit to make working more attractive.

Planck's Constant, 16 Apr 2008, Michele Obama and Her Princeton Thesis

This is precisely what is wrong with blacks in America. They want to remain ghetto refugees. Michelle obviously has no clue that the way to succeed in America is to become white in culture. Every other group that attained success in America became white. You see it especially among the very successful Asians and Jews. They act white, they breathe white, they become white.

Indeed, Michelle's worry back in 1985 was,

"further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant."

Michelle is one of those blacks who no doubt would admonish her friends or relatives not to "act white." There is nothing wrong with acting white, unless of course, you live in Africa.

Planck's Constant, 6 May 2007, Blacks are more Racist than Whites

The most likely victim of a hate crime in the U.S. is a poor, young, white, single urban dweller, according to an analysis of Justice Department statistics collected from between July 2000 and December 2003.

A November report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics detailing a study of 210,000 "hate crimes" a year during that period has gone virtually unreported by the U.S. press.

But it does contain some surprising numbers. While race is, by far, the No. 1 factor cited as the reason for hate crimes, blacks are slightly less likely to be victims and far more likely to be perpetrators, the statistics show.

Al Sharpton is right in one regard: there is a race of people in America who are overly exploited, intimidated, physically attacked and victims of racism and hate crimes; but they ain't black folk.

New America Media, 24 Apr 2006, Discrimination, Not Illegal Immigration, Fuels Black Job Crisis

But several years before the immigration combatants squared off, then University of Wisconsin graduate researcher Devah Pager pointed the finger in another direction, a direction that makes most employers squirm. And that's toward the persistent and deep racial discrimination in the workplace. Pager found that black men without a criminal record are less likely to find a job than white men with criminal records.

Parapundit, 9 May 2005, Black Unemployment Rate Has Risen During Economic Recovery

But if racial discrimination is such a factor, why has Hispanic job growth outpaced that of whites? (For example, Hispanics got 60 percent of the new jobs created in March; in the entire Bush II era Hispanic employment has grown 14.3 percent vs. just 0.3 percent for non-Hispanic employment growth).

WLBT News, Political Ads Blame Immigration for Black Unemployment

Recent anti-immigration ads blame foreign-born workers as the cause for blacks not having jobs. One of the ads states: "If you're a black American, you've noticed many of us are out of work. You've probably also noticed a huge increase in immigration. Those two facts are related."

In the ads Dr. Frank Morris, former executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, says 40% of the decline in black employment is due to immigration.

"Anybody that's trying to get a job as a day laborer, he is gonna have a hard time if you have a flood of immigrants coming into this state or into this country," said Rep. Credell Calhoun (D-Hinds County).

Calhoun is a member of the Mississippi Black Legislative Caucus. He recently voted for Senate Bill 2988 which forces employers to check the legal status of potential workers.

NevisBlog, Where Have All The Young Caribbean Males Gone?

The young males of the Caribbean are becoming an endangered species and new prisons and increased security budgets would not provide a solution to the problem. This is the view of Nevis’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Social Development, the Honourable Hensley Daniel. Mr. Daniel made the observation during and interview with the Department of Information last week at his Charlestown Office, while announcing plans by his Ministry for the designation of 2009 as the “Year of the Family” on Nevis.

“The first thing is this, many of them are in our prisons. Imprisonment is staggering! And we are thinking of building a new prison. And when you think of building new prisons, that’s an admission of failure to address the critical issues of prevention and rehabilitation because your young people are not supposed to be in prison”.

“The young males are underachieving, and this underachievement in education in particular is leading to the anti-social behaviour. We have to ensure that most of our young people achieve in education and training in school, the Minister of Youth said.

Noting that the family held the key to the social and economic development of the region, Mr. Daniel also looked at the potential implications for the region, in the event that this trend is not addressed.

“The implication for Nevis and the Caribbean is this: it is going to burst our budgets, because we will never be able to generate the resources needed to put a cap on crime and violence and anti-social behaviour. If you look at all the budgets in the region you see a significant increase in security.
