Iran to host anti-holocaust cartoon contest

no virgins in Islamic paradise

Iran’s most popular daily newspaper, Hamshahri, is set to initiate a Holocaust cartoon contest in what it says is a response to cartoons disparaging Islam’s prophet Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper (1).

I don't understand. Iran has been denying the Holocaust for quite some time. Hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad shocked the world when he publicly declared that the Holocaust was a “myth” and threatened that Israel must be “wiped off the map”. Now, all of a sudden, they say they are going to be mean-spirited but only because of the Danish cartoons. Yeah, all along they have been decent human beings, but now the bad West is turning them into desecraters of others' religion.

I hate to break this to you Iran, but if you think the holocaust is a myth, let me tell you something about the 72 virgins in heaven waiting for Islamic Martyrs: it's a lie - it just ain't so. All your martyrs died for nothing. If you want to have a contest about myths - your Islamic Paradise is the myth you should have cartoons about.

UPDATE [1 Nov 2006]: As for Hamshahri's challenge to reprint their cartoons, here are the winners of their contest.

ynet news, Iran presents: Holocaust cartoon contest

Iran's most popular daily newspaper, Hamshahri, is set to initiate a Holocaust cartoon contest in what it says is a response to cartoons disparaging Islam's prophet Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper.

"This will be an international cartoon competition on the topic of the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazawi, the paper's graphic editor.

The editor added the newspaper intends to fight back by claiming the publication of Holocaust cartoons is done in the name of freedom of expression.

"Western newspapers published these caricatures, which constitute desecration, under the pretense of freedom of expression," he said. "Let's see if they mean what they say once we publish Holocaust caricatures.
