One of my readers asked that I help spread the word on the plight of the Burmese who have been living under a dictatorship for 45 years. It should be noted that I and those opposed to the military rulers continue to use the name Burma for the country as does the United States, Australia, Ireland, and the UK, while the European Union uses "Burma/Myanmar". Not surprisingly, the idiots at the United Nations in their usual knee-buckling manner use "Myanmar".

Here is the story in brief:

The socialist country of Burma, one of the largest countries in the Southeast Asia mainland, has been badly mismanaged economically by the military since 1962. Protests began in August 2007 after the government increased the price of fuel. After monks were injured by troops during a rally on 5 Sep 2007, the demonstrations increased until 19 Sep 2007 when hundreds (some say two thousand or more) monks staged a protest march in the city of Sittwe. Then larger protests ignited in Rangoon and other cities. The security forces started severe actions to repress the demonstrations leading to a number of deaths and injuries. On 28 Sep 2007 Internet access was cut] and some journalists were arrested and others warned not to report on the protests.
