Jerry Lewis sorry for gay slur
Comedian Jerry Lewis on Tuesday apologized for using the word "fag" as he broadcast his annual Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy which, by the way, raised a record $63.8 million in pledges and contributions.
He made a sincere apology and that settles the matter for me. What does bother me is the reaction of GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation):
CNN,
Jerry Lewis apologizes for saying gay slurGiuliano said GLAAD was requesting a meeting with the comedian, who has done the Labor Day telethon for 42 years.
"We want to sit down with him, help him understand why these words are so hurtful, and give him an opportunity to raise public awareness about the destructive impact of these kinds of anti-gay slurs, even more so in attempted humor," he said in his statement.
This sounds just like Al Sharpton wanting Don Imus to kneel before him in supplication and slaver. I think Jerry Lewis is sorry and doesn't need any one to help him understand why these words are so hurtful.
Will blacks, gays, Muslims, and everyone else please take a chill pill! Does every single person in this country have to have a news conference or a lawsuit every time they feel they are being insulted? Get over it. Life is about insult.
That's right, life is about getting insulted. Man has been insulting others since the beginning of time. It is called a joke. A joke is not funny unless it is at someone else's expense. What is important is how you accept it. In this regard, Christian biblical scholar John Gill has some wise advice on the matter:
Bible Tools,
InsultsBaptist commentator John Gill (1697-1771) writes in his Exposition of the Old Testament on verse 21:
Seeing so it is, that imperfection attends the best of men, no man is wise at all times, foolish words and unguarded expressions will sometimes drop from him, which it is better to take no notice of; they should not be strictly attended to, and closely examined, since they will not bear it. A man should not listen to everything that is said of himself or others; he should not curiously inquire what men say of him; and what he himself hears he should take no notice of; it is often best to let it pass, and not call it over again; to feign the hearing of a thing, or make as if you did not hear it; for oftentimes, by rehearsing a matter, or taking up words spoken, a deal of trouble and mischief follows.
GLAAD would have done better for the gay movement to ignore the comment here since it was not done purposely to harm or degrade anyone. Treating every single piddling tiny inconsequential occurrence of a perceived slight lessens the impact of when it is done purposefully and in anger and hatred. We all know what happens if you cry wolf when the wolf is very far from being a wolf. Jerry Lewis is no gay-basher, is very sorry, it was a careless remark, leave it be.
Listen, my gay friend, if you are worried about hatred and intolerance that contributes to putting your community in harm's way, then where are you in keeping more Muslims from coming to America? Where were you in condemning Iran when they executed these two youths?
Do you have any comment on the following:

Ugandan Muslim sect threaten 'anti-gay squad'Muslim youth belonging to the Tabliq movement in Uganda have confirmed they plan to set up 'Anti-Gay Squads' to fight homosexuality.
Sheikh Multah Bukenya, a senior cleric in the sect, announced the squads during Friday prayers at Noor Mosque in the capital, Kampala.
He said: "We are ready to act swiftly and form this squad that will wipe out all abnormal practices like homosexuality in our society.
In case you don't know, Islamic Sharia law, dictates the death penalty for gay sex. So when Muslims say wipe out they don't mean as in wipe out illiteracy, they mean it as in wipe out cockroaches. So spend your energy on real enemies, like Islam. By the way, how many of your members are Muslim? Eh?
