Playing With Your Food
By Bernie on 18 Sep 2008
Tamara Wilhelm, Joerg Piringer and Susanna Gartmayer of the Orchestra of Vegetables play instruments made of vegetables in Vienna.
From their website: The Vegetable Orchestra performs music solely on instruments made of vegetables. Using carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, leek-zucchini-vibrators, cucumberophones and celery bongos, the orchestra creates its own extraordinary and vegetable sound universe. The ensemble overcomes preserved and marinated sound conceptions or tirelessly re-stewed listening habits, putting its focus on expanding the variety of vegetable instruments, developing novel musical ideas and exploring fresh vegetable sound gardens.
If not for my mother I would be an accomplished Jew's harp (made from parsnip) player today, but she kept telling me not to play with my food.
I should mention that certain vegetable instruments should not be brought into a bedroom. Last night I told my wife I wanted her to play with my zucchini-vibrator and she said that that was the sickest thing I ever asked her to do. Context is everything.
Enjoy the 11-musician Vienna Vegetable Orchestra playing “Frkklz.” If you are wondering what they do with some of the veggies: they make soup from leftovers and serve it to the audience. And no, they are not vegetarians nor do they feel guilty that they play on vegetables while there are starving people on the planet. They are quite correct that sending food to Africa only makes it worse for Africans. Read For Gods Sake - Stop Helping Africa.
