Last Friday on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, the round-table guests were actor Alec Baldwin (who astonishingly blamed Democrats as well as Republicans for our current economic crisis), reporter Christiane Amanpour, and comedian (and brilliant military strategist) Garry Shandling.
If you heard the show, you would have heard Ms. Amanpour saying that the next President will likely hear National Intelligence Estimates that the era of American dominance is now on the decline.
Rumors of the decline of American dominance have been exaggerated before. In my lifetime we were never more depressed as a nation than 1979. We had Jimmy "negotiate rather than demand" Carter who allowed a few desert fleas in Iran to hold Americans hostage for 444 days. These Islamists weren't just holding Americans, they were holding diplomats thus breaking centuries of international law and principles regarding diplomatic immunity and the sovereignty of embassy compounds. By violating these sacrosanct principles Muslims have made future diplomatic negotiations impossible (except for weaselly appeasers like Obama) because our envoys can be held hostage at any time whenever it suits the Muslim mind.
Ronald Reagan was able to restore to Americans the pride they once had for their country. During the last 8 years we have seen leftist defeatist cowards bad-mouthing America as the Mullahs did back in the Carter years:
The Lie: Our military is overstretched. We cannot send troops elsewhere because they are stuck in Iraq.
The Truth: We fought on two fronts simultaneously during WWII. If we had to, we could muster the will and the power today to fight on three fronts provided Democrats don't surrender prematurely.
America spends 20% more on the military than the rest of the world combined [Global Security Org]. 5 times more than the other two super-powers, Russia and China, combined. No one comes close to us in sheer military might, no one. So as far as declining military dominance, our enemies are dreaming. By the way, if America were truly an Imperialist country as Liberals claim, the world, the entire world, would be under American rule today. Those who doubt we could rule the world have no clue about the military might of our country.
The Lie: Our economy is in shambles.
The Truth: Although we are finally paying for the sin of forcing banks to lend to poor people, we are still an economic powerhouse; our gross domestic product is 3 times bigger than Japan's, 4 times bigger than China's or Germany's [Wiki]. We are 25% of the world total GDP. When America coughs, testicles in China shake. No country approaches us in economic might - even close.
So as far as declining economic dominance, our enemies are dreaming.
We could be stronger economically but we hobble ourselves. We spend hundreds of billions in a futile War against Drugs. We have a convoluted, complicated, impossible-to-understand tax system that should be replaced with a flat tax. Billions are wasted by allowing Unions to kill the few industries left in this country. We need to wean ourselves off farm subsidies, welfare, medicare, ACORN lending to poor people, and buying oil from our enemies.
After WWII, US family incomes grew in all sections of the population and fastest for the poor - until the War on Poverty was declared. Once the government started focusing on helping the poor, their incomes grew slower than the rest of the country. Since 1970 the percentage of Americans in poverty has not changed and stands today at 12.6% of the population. All the gazillions wasted on helping the poor has not helped the poor at all. Given that every other group in America has improved, the poor are worse off than before the Great Society turned its lens on them.
All the gazillions wasted on fighting drugs has not reduced drug usage. All that we have done is put more people in prison than even tyrannical regimes in Russia and China.
We import products made by American companies overseas which were relocated abroad to avoid our excessive corporation taxes and unreasonable labor demands from unions. Before we became a nation of free-loaders we propped up Europe and Asia for decades after World War Two when we were creditor to the world. Today we have so hamstrung American companies that 9% of our shares, 17% of our corporate bonds and 24% of our government bonds are held by foreigners [Spiegel Online].
We waste more than the entire world saves. While appeasers like Maher, Baldwin, and Shandling worry about 10 billion dollars spent on Iraq each month we spend ten times that amount on mandatory entitlements, most of it a complete and unnecessary waste.
While everyone is worried about a one-time bailout of 700 billion dollars, we will be spending that much every year beginning in 2017 on mandatory entitlements.
Even as a shadow of what we used to be, we still dominate the world in military strength, economic power, and intellectual achievement. Imagine how greater we could be if we didn't have both hands tied behind our back.
If we limit Muslim immigration we may benefit by the troubles in Europe. Due to too many Muslims in Europe there is a white flight of unprecedented numbers to the US: engineers, doctors, professional people.
The New York Times, More Dutch Plan to Emigrate as Muslim Influx Tips Scales
AMSTERDAM - Paul Hiltemann had already noticed a darkening mood in the Netherlands. He runs an agency for people wanting to emigrate and his client list had surged.
But he was still taken aback in November when a Dutch filmmaker was shot and his throat was slit, execution style, on an Amsterdam street.
In the weeks that followed, Mr. Hiltemann was inundated by e-mail messages and telephone calls. "There was a big panic," he said, "a flood of people saying they wanted to leave the country."
Leave this stable and prosperous corner of Europe? Leave this land with its generous social benefits and ample salaries, a place of fine schools, museums, sports grounds and bicycle paths, all set in a lively democracy?
The answer, increasingly, is yes. This small nation is a magnet for immigrants, but statistics suggest there is a quickening flight of the white middle class. Dutch people pulling up roots said they felt a general pessimism about their small and crowded country and about the social tensions that had grown along with the waves of newcomers, most of them Muslims."The Dutch are living in a kind of pressure cooker atmosphere," Mr. Hiltemann said.
As Europe descends into an Islamic Hell, we will see our shores fill up with Europe's best educated and wealthiest. Unfortunately those whites with no education and even less money will be stuck fighting Muslims in the streets of Paris, Munich, and Amsterdam. Multiculturalists will finally enjoy the logical and military conclusion to tolerance of Islam.
Hopefully we will learn Europe's lesson; otherwise one day we will find our best and brightest heading toward Australia or any other country with few Muslims.
Photographer's caption for photo above: My apartment in Florence is right above a Muslim mosque. Every Friday Muslims (mainly African immigrants) come here at midday to pray. Quite often there are so many people that the mosque is full, so some people have to pray on the street outside. In the middle right you can see all of their shoes. In the middle left you can see lots of cardboard boxes which contain the sunglasses that are sold on the streets of Florence.
