One Day, Leroy, You too can be President
By Bernie on 06 Nov 2008
I know one thing: that for the past two centuries immigrant parents have been telling their children that if they studied real hard and worked even harder that one day they could be the President of the United States. I'm sure that tens of millions of blacks have all their lives dreamed that one day we would have a Black President; however, I doubt there were very many black mothers telling their children that they too could one day be President. There are dreams and there are impossible dreams.
Obama raised more money for a Presidential campaign than anyone in history. What may not be well known is that tens of thousands of poor blacks sold whatever they could, borrowed whatever they could, and somehow got a hold of a few thousand dollars they desperately could not afford and sent it to Obama's campaign on the crazy, ridiculous, absurd notion that a black man, this black man, could achieve the impossible and become the most powerful leader of the civilized world.
Of all the bad things that Obama could do to this country in regard to making Americans more reliant on our government for handouts through sharing the wealth or making them more lazy by telling them there is a floor beneath which He will not allow them to fall no matter how little they work or how stupid they become because whatever they need he will take from those above them who have succeeded; of all the stupid, socialist ideas that have failed in every other country in the world but will somehow work better here; of all these things there is one good to come out of this: Now, and forever from this day on, every black parent without exception can say to their child what every other American child has heard before, "One day, if you study and work very hard, you can be President of the United States of America." And mean it.
Would I have preferred a smart, articulate, charismatic, young Libertarian running for President? Yes. Would I care if they were male or female; black or white; Arab or Chinese; Jewish or Christian? Nope. As long as our laws, our Constitution, our way of life and culture are more important to them than the country or culture from whither they came. That means that if they are black, American culture is more important than Africa's; if they are Chinese, that our Constitution is more important than the sayings of Confucius; if they are Catholic, that our Laws are more important than the pronouncements of the Holy See. In other words they have to be assimilated Americans.
I exclude Muslims who believe that a Caliphate should one day replace our form of government. Sorry, Ahmed.
Obviously America was ready for a black President.
Los Angeles Times, 11 Jan 2008, A black president? Seen a few
America is ready for a black president because we've seen them before. Black presidents, in fact, have been our awesomest presidents ever: Morgan Freeman in "Deep Impact" and Dennis Haysbert in "24." And their approval ratings -- box office grosses and Nielsen ratings, the only approval that matters in the U.S. -- have been huge. The Freeman and Haysbert administrations, which endured Carter-level challenges such as a comet headed toward Earth and working with Kiefer Sutherland, have specifically prepared us for Obama. Like him, they confront without being confrontational. They're calm, earnest, utterly decent and way, way cooler than white presidents...
If I were not an atheist I would say, "May God Bless our president-elect and pray that he does the right thing for our country." He will be taking office at the most perilous of times for our nation. Although I am financially prepared for the worst of outcomes, in my heart I really do not want to see our nation become second-rate. I hope the awesome nature of the office convinces him that sharing the wealth is not the way to make the poor better off. I too dream of change - I dream that Obama changes into a Capitalist.
Despite my previous articles, I really do not wish Obama to screw up this country. He made history this week. Let's hope that the rest of history records a new Golden Age for our nation. Let all of us hope that America's First Black President does not become America's last Black President.
P.S. Regarding the insulting and provocative title to this post: whites can now publicly make jokes about blacks just as blacks, because they were not in power, made jokes about whites without being called racist; so don't call me names, I'm just a humble whitey under the thumb of a black master who wants to take all my wealth and redistribute it.
In a related blog post, Powerline notes another bright side to this election: Barack Obama's victory almost certainly means that neither Hillary Clinton nor Al Gore will ever be president of the United States.
