When Bloggers Say Goodbye
By Bernie on 12 Dec 2009
I don't get it. It costs zero dollars a year to keep your blog on Blogger, a free blog publishing tool from Google, so why would anyone go out of their way to delete months or even years worth of work?
I can understand someone like Jim Hoft deleting his blog at the blogspot address because he moved it to a new publishing platform, although he should have made sure all of his archives were in the new place before redirecting readers to his new home.
I employ someone to periodically check every link in my archives and a number of my old posts (for example: Lots of water like chocolate) with links to old Gateway Pundit articles showed up as "Not Found" on his site. Nothing personal Jim, but I consider it quite rude to move to a new website without first making sure all of your old posts properly redirect.
Fortunately for my readers, I excerpted enough of his original article that they can see why I linked to him in the first place. I do this for the convenience of my visitors because I myself have been disappointed reading other blog articles where I found things like this: "Hey, want to see 32 naked college girls crammed into one bathtub? Click here." And when I click on the link, instead of reaching the intended article, I get a 404 error.
But if one is not moving to a new blog, why delete a free blog? Why not just leave it there? Google doesn't care and in addition you won't pee off readers who come to your old location only to find "The blog you were looking for was not found."
So I'm very disappointed in blogger Dumb Ox Daily News who deleted his blog on almost no notice at all; from less than three weeks ago:
Goodbye My Dear Friends
Hi Dear Friends and Serendipitous readers,I'm about to delete my "Dumb Ox Daily News" blog.
If we were such dear friends, you should not have deleted your blog. You do realize that people have articles linking to nothing? Dumb Ox, if you're reading this, how come you deleted your blog. What for? Who was it hurting?
Why not just say goodbye and keep your stupid fingers off the delete key? I don't get it.

Anyone may republish this article for non-commercial use without asking my permission. I make it easy, see details here.
