The Simon is a product of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd, a former sub-division of the Israeli Defence ministry which now develops and produces fighting-technologies for the Israel Defense Forces as well as for export.

Previous door-breaching technology blasted holes through the doors, but the Simon is designed to blast the door out of its frame, making the door fall in so soldiers or police can easily enter the room. Because the design uses a foot-long standoff rod which hits the door first, the disk-shaped explosive round inside the device disperses the force of the explosion across the door surface, rather than through the door, causing the door to fall rather than break, so that if there are noncombatants inside, they will not be injured by flying pieces of the door.

The Simon is licensed to the US where it is called the M100 Grenade Rifle Entry Munition (GREM) and earned the US Army Award for Top 10 Inventions of 2005. Since then it has become one of the most popular and widely used infantry weapons in Iraq.

My Muslim readers will notice that the aim of the technology is to knock even metal doors down yet avoid killing those behind the doors. All lives, even worthless Jihadist lives, are precious to Israelis. I know what you are thinking, Ahmed, "Why don't the Israelis simply shoot a rocket-propelled grenade and eliminate the door and everyone else inside?" No, that's just Muslim-thinking.
