The Demise of the Push Button, Receive Bacon Meme
By Bernie on 03 Nov 2010
In real life, the Push Button, Receive Bacon meme is found in public restrooms where a prankster adds a "Receive Bacon" caption under the wavy graphic instruction for automatic hand dryers. The first pane of the international sign depicts a finger pushing a button to release heat from the machine while the second pane shows a pair of hands drying under heat waves. The caption interprets the red wavy stripes to mean thick slices of bacon will be dispensed from the machine.
Some of my readers may complain that such graffiti is unnecessarily cruel to Muslims who may become discouraged from drying their hands for fear that bacon slices may rain down on them. Oh, what is a Muslim to wadu?
The real life meme has spawned knockoffs in the Internet world such as "Drive Car, Receive Bacon;" "Press Button, Receive Bacon, Enjoy Bacon;" and "Press Bhutan, Receev Virgins."
Sadly this meme will eventually disappear since electronic hand dryers are replacing them. You know the ones, you merely wave your hand in front of them to dispense paper towels or heated air.
Actually almost everything in public bathrooms is being replaced with electronic devices. When I move away from a urinal, it detects my absence and flushes automatically. I go to wash my hands and the faucet turns on automatically. I usually take a hand-towel or toilet paper to the exit so I can open it without touching the handle with my bare hands. In the future this won't be necessary as public toilet facilities install electronic doors that open automatically.
My kids are looking at a Japanese electronic self-cleaning toilet bowl that does not require one to use hands to finish one's business. Just sit down, do your business, push button, receive cleansing.
Here are some of its features: pre-warmed seats, music, air drier, and air purifier. One problem though: it does not cook bacon.
A tip of the turban to Know Your Meme.
