You might have read the story about this poor woman, Ozodoa Khakimov, 23, an immigrant from Uzbekistan, whose husband, Ulubek, 26, is accused of using a house key to gouge out chunks of her flesh and threatening to kill her and her baby.
Before the couple came to America from Uzbekistan, he carved the words "bitch" and "whore" in Cyrillic on her body and had been beating her from the day they were married in Uzbekistan last December.
Fortunately for Ozodoa, when hospital workers at Coney Island Hospital were prepping her for a C-Section they found the epithets over her body and called the NYPD. Ozodoa later told them how her husband beat her while she was pregnant and called her at the hospital saying he was coming to kill her and their newborn child. Police were waiting for him at the hospital where he was arrested.
You might ask how any man could treat a woman in such a barbaric way. One hint: the newborn's name: Muhammed Ali. Had Ozodoa delivered in Uzbekistan, a country 88% Muslim, it is doubtful that her husband would have been charged with anything.
Just FYI:
