Stop Already with Languages Other Than English
In 1919, President Theodore Roosevelt wrote, "We have room for but one language in this country, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding house." (1)
Although a number of states have already declared English to be the official language of their state (2), we need to pass a constitutional amendment designating English as the official language of the country. This would mean that no individual would have the right to demand government services in a language other than English. We did not need this in the past.
In the past, immigrants came to this country, learned our language, adopted our customs, assimilated into our culture, embraced our way of life, enjoyed our freedoms, and became Americans. This is no longer true. We are now allowing into our country peoples who demand we speak their language, who despise our culture, detest our customs, view of way of life as decadent and immoral, who are disgusted with our freedoms, and who have no intention of ever being Americans at heart.
We are seeing Muslim immigrants coming into our country speaking Somali, Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, and dozens of different languages and who have every right at present to demand that we accommodate and offer them government services in their own language.
In the Old Testament a united humanity of the generations following the Great Flood spoke a single language and by this one unique quality were capable of achieving anything they desired. When this people proposed to build a tower unto the Heavens God did not stop their construction by gnarling their hands, or by dimming their sight, or taking away construction skills from their brains. He confounded their speech. The entire building of the Tower of Babel was stopped by the simple expedient of taking away a common tongue.
And here we are, in the greatest country in the world, having built the most powerful and mighty economic society in history and now we are confounding our speech. We are allowing immigrants to take away our common language. Before, there was nothing America could not accomplish. I now fear we are losing our country.
We no longer have a melting pot, we have a hotchpotch stew.
The plain truth is that the whole world needs to speak English; see my article Europe has some nerve not speaking English.
