Why God Did Not End the Earth Yesterday
By Bernie on 22 May 2011
Although I am an atheist, allow me to suspend my disbelief for the purpose of the following discussion.
By now most of you have realized that 'The Rapture' failed to kick in yesterday. One of the disappointed believers had this to say: "I was hoping for it because I think heaven would be a lot better than this Earth." 1
God did not fashion Heaven to be better than this world. If you are a Christian, then you must take Jesus at his word (from Matthew 6:9–13):
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Jesus did not instruct the faithful to pray for the day that they could be whisked up to Heaven, but rather to do God's will here on Earth as His will is done in Heaven. Make of this Earth as peaceful and beautiful as it is in Heaven.
As for waiting for God's Kingdom, it is already here, inside each of us, Luke 17:21 (King James Version): Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
If it were a blessed thing to shed our bodies and fly our souls to Heaven, then suicide would not be a sin. Our Heaven, for us humans, is on this Earth. If we cannot make Heaven on Earth, we will never attain it in the afterlife.
God did not end the world yesterday because he was not expecting us to leave. He made this world specifically for us to live in it, not for us to leave it.

BBC News, 'Rapture': Believers perplexed after prediction fails
Followers of an evangelical broadcaster who declared that Saturday would be Judgement Day are trying to make sense of the failed prediction.
Some believers expressed bewilderment or said it was a test from God of their faith, after the day passed without event.

"I had some scepticism but I was trying to push the scepticism away because I believe in God," said Keith Bauer, who travelled 4,830km (3,000 miles), from Maryland to California, where Mr Camping's Family Radio is based, for the Rapture.
"I was hoping for it because I think heaven would be a lot better than this Earth," said Mr Bauer, a tractor-trailer driver, who took the week off work for the voyage.
