The Second Amendment Kept Mexico From Attacking US

Not very many Americans are taught in our schools that less than a hundred years ago we almost went to war with Mexico (1).

Because of tensions between the US and Mexico during WWI, but before the US entered the war, Germany sent a telegram to Mexico promising the Mexican government that if they helped Germany in attacking the United States that Mexico would get back Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico in exchange (2).

The proposal was rejected by Venustiano Carranza, leader of the Constitutionalist movement. But it was not rejected immediately. The Mexican President assigned one of his generals the task of assessing the feasibility of a Mexican takeover of those states. Among other reasons, even if Germany helped militarily in attacking the US, the Mexicans would be faced with occupying a well-armed population in their former territories." (3)

Something to keep in mind the next time a liberal tells you he doesn't see why anyone needs to own a gun,
Leftists in the United States would love for the 2nd Amendment to be repealed. They have no need for a well-armed citizenry to protect their freedoms because they do not value those freedoms.

And before any of my readers dismiss the notion that any country would dare invade the US, consider the following from my article Memorial Day 2010 - Why We Speak English in America:

I suppose if I told someone in 1920s France that in less than two decades, the utterly defeated Germans would be dictating how life is to be lived in their beloved Paris, that they would have laughed at me as being completely insane.

In an alternate universe, if Hitler rose to power now instead of the 1930s, German troops would have no problem goose-stepping into San Francisco, however Dallas would be a problem.

Wikipedia, ABC Powers Conference, 1914

On May 20, 1914, the ABC Powers met in Niagara Falls, Canada, to mediate diplomatically in order to avoid war between the United States and Mexico after increasing tensions over the Tampico Affair and the United States occupation of Veracruz, and developing issues that led to the Mexican Revolution.

"We intend to begin on the first of February unrestricted submarine warfare. We shall endeavor in spite of this to keep the United States of America neutral. In the event of this not succeeding, we make Mexico a proposal of alliance on the following basis: make war together, make peace together, generous financial support and an understanding on our part that Mexico is to reconquer the lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The settlement in detail is left to you. You will inform the President of the above most secretly as soon as the outbreak of war with the United States of America is certain and add the suggestion that he should, on his own initiative, invite Japan to immediate adherence and at the same time mediate between Japan and ourselves. Please call the President's attention to the fact that the ruthless employment of our submarines now offers the prospect of compelling England in a few months to make peace."

Even if Mexico had the military means to win the conflict with the U.S. and re-take the area in question, Mexico would have had severe difficulty accommodating and/or pacifying the large, well-armed, English-speaking population.
