Are There No Arabs Left in the Desert?



Remember when Coca-Cola put out an online teaser of their Super Bowl commercial depicting an Arab walking through a desert? As expected, the perpetually outraged Arab/Muslim lobby shot into action: "Why is it that Arabs are always shown as either oil-rich sheiks, terrorists, or belly dancers?" (1)

First off, Coke was not portraying that Arab as an oil-rich sheik, a terrorist, or a belly dancer. In the second place, Arab advertisers in Arab countries advertising Arab products do the very exact, exact, exact same thing:

What would we say to cowboys if they complained that the ad stereotypes cowboys. Don't modern cowboys drive trucks? I'll tell you what we'd say: go f* yourself and get a life.

What would we say to Vegas showgirls if they complained that the ad stereotypes showgirls. Don't modern showgirls drive around in normal clothing? I'll tell you what we'd say: go f* yourself and get a life.

What would we say to Australians if they complained that the ad stereotypes Australians. Don't Australians drive cars and dress like normal people? I'll tell you what we'd say: go f* yourself and get a life.

And that's what we need to say to offended Arabs and Muslims: go f* yourself and get a life.

But cowboys, showgirls and Australians are not offended. Take a lesson from that Ahmed. And I use the name Ahmed stereotypically.
