Why Chinese in America Succeed

In my article Two Agonist-Antagonist Rants, I mentioned that I am currently studying human anatomy for a future business venture which will start sometime in the spring of 2015. I would like to mention something very interesting regarding Chinese students attending those very same classes.

Many of them barely speak English. That's right - young Chinese students who have not been in this country long enough to speak our language well are taking classes that require them to know the names of muscles, the bones they attach to, the function and pathology of those muscles, and their scientific names. I would venture to say that most Americans would find the lessons too difficult, the concepts too arcane, and the discipline required to pass the exams too arduous; so how do these English-language deficient Asians do it?

They help each other out and they strive to become white. Asian graduates who have previously taken those courses help their novice compatriots who take great pains to eventually learn proper English and become assimilated Americans.

More than a century and a half ago Chinese immigrants flooded California during the Gold Rush. They formed self-supporting communities and have continued to do so into modern times (1).

Despite more than a century and a half of anti-Asian bias and discrimination, the descendents of these immigrants have become the most successful ethnic group in America.

It isn't bigotry and prejudice that holds one back, it's culture. And Asian culture values education. Black culture does not. Asians help each other out, blacks do not. It isn't racism holding blacks back, it's black culture. You hear that Reverend Sharpton?

(1):

The Washington Post, Why Asian American kids excel. It’s not ‘Tiger Moms.’

Young Asian Americans have all kinds of good role models to emulate. Their communities and families make sure they get extra help when they need it. Their families, even on limited resources, manage to seek out and move to neighborhoods with good schools. And they aspire to success with specific goals in mind: medicine, law, engineering and pharmacy. And they aim for the best schools.
