Google Doodle of Wassily Kandinsky`s 148th Birthday and Bad Grammar

Wassily Kandinsky's 148th Birthday
Google Doodle for Today

Today's Google search page will undoubtedly instigate millions of searches for "Wassily Kandinsky" to find out why he is being celebrated in a Google Doodle. My search landed me on an article on the website of UK's The Independent where the following title caught my eye: "Wassily Kandinsky's 148th Birthday: Why is the painter is being celebrated in a Google Doodle?"

The author of course meant "... Why is the painter being celebrated ..."

Normally I don't post articles about the poor state of grammar among English speaking peoples and I certainly do not want my readers criticizing the grammar in comments left by other readers - I don't want to discourage those whose first language is not English from leaving comments - see Rule 5 in my 8 Rules for Comments; however, it's another thing to leave grammatical errors when there should be professional proofreaders going over commercial copy.

Here for example is an image of an ad displayed on a Port Authority train between New York and New Jersey:

bad grammar on subway ad

The ad should read Use Code KHAL20 For An Additional 20% Off. How did it get past proofreaders, layout artists, printers, etc.?

I can understand grammatical mistakes on a one-person blog with no paid proofreaders to go over the text, and I definitely have made my share of errors and goofs, but come on people.

P.S. For most excellent and thorough information and art examples of Wassily Kandinsky go to Artsy where art from the world’s leading galleries, museum collections, foundations, artist estates, art fairs, and benefit auctions, are featured all in one place.
