Are Baby Carrots Kidnapped from Real Carrot Parents?
I never add baby carrots to my soups, stews or salads because baby carrots are not the same breed of carrots as adult carrots and are meant only to be eaten as snacks. According to Grimmway Farms, the largest grower of carrots in the US, as well as the premier supplier of fresh baby carrots, the carrots they use are a specific variety that are smaller in diameter than regular table carrots and grown just for the production of baby carrots.
If you have ever tasted baby carrots cooked in a soup then you know that they taste terrible that way. Some homemakers are just too lazy to cut regular carrots. To read how to properly add carrots (and other things) to soup, see my article How to Add the Proper Amount of Pepper to Food.
Here's a little carrot trivia: in the September 1952 edition of Pageant magazine (now defunct), Marilyn Monroe gave an interview describing her daily diet. Interestingly she ate four or five raw carrots with every meat meal and even a few at breakfast. She loved carrots. We can see from the following photo that they weren't baby carrots - for Marilyn Monroe it seems that size matters.
