So You Want to Blog - Make it Mobile Friendly
More than 3 years ago I informed my readers that 16% of my visitors were using mobile devices to access my blog and that I was considering using an outside company to help make my website more mobile-friendly.
I was never happy with using someone else to do the job, either it would cost a monthly fee or, if I opted for a free version of their mobile-making product, my readers would have to put up with advertisements delivered up by them to pay for the service.
In the past few weeks I have started a process to personally make my blog display well on mobile devices so that I wouldn't need to make two separate versions of my website, but rather one version that automatically changed the viewing port depending on the device, whether a smart-watch, smartphone, tablet, or desktop.
The statistics above show that non-desktop devices now account for more than 42% of my reader visits. I expect before the year 2020 that more than 90% of visitors to my site will be from mobile devices and tablets.
A month ago, when I searched for specific articles on my website using my Galaxy S5, I did not have a good experience, and indeed, Google did not report that my blog was mobile-friendly. Now they do.
I have also cut the page-load speed by more than 80% so that mobile users who pay by the data-bit will save money when visiting my site on their smartphone.
