I was born during World War Two in Uzbekistan, S.S.R. Since the war was still on my father had fears that the Nazis would one day arrive and start killing Jews and so I was baptized Catholic.

I remember the first week when Sister told me that I had to register for Catechism classes on Sunday as well as show up for mass. I brought up the point that I was Jewish and so perhaps was exempt from those two activities. Eh, she didn't buy it.

Bayonne, with its tree-lined streets and quiet, safe neighborhoods never pushed its Catholicism in your face. So when you see these arrogant out-of-towners on the corner of 23rd and Broadway handing out fliers you know they can't be native Bayonnites.
