Hispanics Can Be Republicans

Blogger David Zincavage has the right advice for Republicans: that they could count on more Hispanic votes if only they would stop with the ridiculous anti-immigration rhetoric (1).

Although I personally would be happier if new immigrants arriving to our shores were atheists, at least Hispanics are mostly Catholic, and as David points out, the immigration wave in Europe is made up of Muslims from North Africa and the Middle East. Here in America, more Catholics means more people who can easily assimilate into the American fabric, while in Europe, more Muslims means more citizens who will try to change the fabric of their host country's culture.

While it is true that the majority of low-wage immigrant workers in America do not speak English well [Link: Urban Institute], at least they try, and certainly the majority of their children growing up in America will end up speaking English.

On the other hand, many Muslims born and bred in France cannot speak a word of French, do not consider themselves French but see themselves as Muslims first, then as Moroccans, Algerians, Turks, Tunisians, Senegalese, etc., second and not at all French even third. France has more than 6 millions Muslims yet 58% of them do not consider themselves French but rather as Muslims first (2).

At first you may say, "Wow! Only 42% of Muslims in France consider themselves as French." But here's the kicker: that actually is one of the highest percentages in Europe: In Germany only 13% consider themselves a national citizen first (and not a Muslim first). In the UK, it's only 7% and in Spain 3%. Clearly Muslims in Europe are not assimilating.

Even the Muslims who come to America do so not to become part of America, but to change it.

Center for Immigration Studies, Muslim Immigrants in the United States

Islamists arrive in the United States despising the country and all it represents, intending to make converts, exploit the freedoms and rights granted them, and build a movement that will effect basic changes in the country's way of life and its government. The superpower status of the United States makes it especially attractive to those who wish to change the world order; what better place to start? Islamists do not accept the United States as it is but want to change it into a majority Muslim country where the Qur'an replaces the Constitution. "Our plan is, we are going to conquer America," is how a missionary put it already in the 1920s.4 His latter-day successors are no less ambitious. They have two alternate strategies, non-violent (i.e., conversion of the Christian majority) and violent (i.e., jihad), to accomplish this.

Just to be clear, I am in favor of legal, documented, unrestricted immigration for Mexicans (but not Muslims), see my article Let all 100 million Mexicans come to America.

While the majority of Hispanic immigrants do not pose a threat to our culture, I should caution that there is one small problem: because most Hispanic immigrants are not well educated, it is easy for Muslim men to persuade Hispanic women to convert to Islam (3). Indeed, many Muslim men will date infidel women only for the purpose of converting them. And if the women do not convert willingly then they are converted by force.

When I went to Israel to study in 1965, I did not know a word of Hebrew nor could I read Hebrew. Learning a new language is difficult enough, but imagine having to learn to read a strange new alphabet as well, especially one that looks like this:.אולפן

The Hebrew word you see is Ulpan, a school for the intensive study of Hebrew. There are many different kinds of Ulpanim (the plural of Ulpan) in Israel. Most teach adult immigrants basic language skills such as conversation, writing and comprehension. Most also provide instruction in Israeli culture, history, and geography to enable new citizens to quickly integrate into the social, cultural and economic life of their new home.

Because the courses I took at the Hebrew University were entirely taught in Hebrew, the Ulpan I attended had six hours of instruction every day and covered the words I would be using in classes later that day. In other words, my math and physics teachers supplied my language instructors with the Hebrew words they would be using in class. So if we were covering triangles in math class that day, I would be learning how to say triangle in Hebrew in the morning. After two years of such intensive learning, I was speaking Hebrew like a native, although one who was more familiar with differential calculus than with Israeli politics.

Similarly, because we have so many new immigrants coming into our country, it is important that we as a society enable them to more easily assimilate; we should establish schools similar to Ulpanim to teach not only English but our history and culture as well. Immigrants who speaks our language well are less likely to engage in criminal behavior. If they learn our history and culture and respect our traditions, they will be less likely to vote Democratic or convert to Islam.

Never Yet Melted, The GOP Could Win the Hispanic Vote

Emphasizing punishing illegal aliens, trafficking in slurs associating immigration with welfare and emergency room medical care, noisy advocacy of border closing and rigid enforcement of impractical and inflexible immigration regulations are popular vices of conservatives expressive of unattractive emotional impulses and representative of unsound political reasoning.

...

We should be congratulating ourselves that the people volunteering are Hispanic Catholics, generally hard-working, of conservative disposition, and possessing strong family values. In Europe, the same kind of immigration wave is made up of Muslims from North Africa and the Middle East.

French Muslims differ strongly from other European Muslims about: Fewer of them see a natural conflict between being a devout Muslim and living in a modern society : 42% consider themselves a national citizen first (and not a Muslim first)

Orlando Sentinel, More Hispanic women converting to Islam

Though they make up a small fraction of the nation's 6 million Muslims, Hispanic women converting to Islam are exerting influence beyond their numbers, teaching Spanish-Arabic classes, forming Hispanic-Muslim organizations and distributing Spanish translations of the Qur'an.

...

Some have founded support networks. Piedad, a network of Muslim women that seeks to educate Spanish-speaking communities about Islam, had 50 members when it was founded in 1988; it now has more than 344 nationally. Other groups, like the Latino American Dawah Organization, which was formed in 1997, promote the legacy of Islam in Spain and Latin America.

"It's a movement that is growing, particularly in urban areas," said Manuel Vasquez, a religion professor at the University of Florida. "It's part of the cross-fertilization that's occurring among immigrant groups."

There are about 40,000 Hispanic Muslims in the United States, according to a spokesman for the Islamic Society of North America. The largest populations live in New York, Texas, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami, American Muslim organizations say.
