Muhammad or Mohammed Just Call Me Mo
By Bernie on 31 Oct 2011
Yesterday, at the end of my FAQ article, I came across an interesting comment left by a reader from Texas cleping himself BeeJay. Here is what he had to say:
Please...Bernie; the correct spelling (from Muslims) is Mohammad, not Mohamed nor Mohammed. Kindly take note of the letter "a" in the name. I'm a Christian, by-the-way Bernie. If you want more respect to the guy, you may add like this after his name: (Peace Be With Him)
So is there only one correct way to spell Mohammed? No.
I use 'Mohammed' which is the Urdu and Indian version of the name.
In my phonecard business I have a number of West African distributors who call themselves 'Mamadou.'
In Turkey it is spelled 'Mehmed' or 'Mehmet,' in many parts of North Africa it is 'Muhammed,' in Bosnia it's 'Muhammed.'
While Saudi Arabia and Pakistan insist that 'Muhammad' is the correct version, the Oxford Dictionary of World History list 'Muhammad' or 'Mohammed' as the name of the prophet of Islam.
Wikipedia says 'Muhammad' is also transliterated as 'Mohammed.'
It is true that in Arabic there is only one way to spell the name of the Apostle of God, but that name can be spelled more than a few dozen ways in English. I prefer 'Mohammed' because that is the way I hear the name in my head.
