100 Lashes If You Are Not Dying Of Laughter
By Bernie on 02 Nov 2011
In my 2007 article Dinner, Tuxedos, and the Eiffel Tower I informed my readers that one of the methods I initially used to learn to speak French was to read French comic books, specifically the series Astérix le Gaulois, about the adventures of a tiny Gaul and his idiot friend Obelisk.
Most Americans would be surprised to learn that Asterix is one of the most popular comics in the world and has been translated into more than 100 languages. The French love comic strips which they call "bandes dessinées" (drawn strips) and even have a theme park called Parc Astérix based on the comic book characters.
In 2006, during the Danish Cartoon Affair the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo was one of five French papers that published the drawings that angered many Muslims.
Well, Charles Hebdo has upset Muslims again this week when the paper came out with an issue in which it named the Prophet Mohammed as its "editor-in-chief." The cover shows the Apostle of God saying: "100 lashes if you are not dying of laughter".
Seems a few Muslims didn't get the joke:
BBC, French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo attacked in Paris
The offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris have been destroyed in a petrol bomb attack.
It comes a day after the publication named the Prophet Muhammad as its "editor-in-chief" for its next issue.
The cover of the magazine carried a caricature of the Prophet making a facetious comment.
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon has described the petrol-bombing as an unjustifable attack on the freedom of the press.
The editor-in-chief of the magazine, Stephane Charbonnier, said Islam could not be excluded from freedom of the press.
He said: "If we can poke fun at everything in France, if we can talk about anything in France apart from Islam or the consequences of Islamism, that is annoying."
This is what happens when you have more than 10% of your population filled with Muslims. I am not surprised, as I have often written: Muslims have no Sense of Humor.
