Coming Back From Florida I lose Two Ounces

My wife and I just returned from Florida where we attended the 2014 Americheer InterNational Cheer-leading Championship (March 22-23) at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando to watch my two granddaughters and their friends perform. They were fantastic and to respect their privacy I will not say more.

What I do want to discuss is that my wife and I went on a dinner binge for the past 3 nights: Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and the Kona Cafe at the Polynesian Resort along with lunches at the Grand Floridian, Downtown Disney, and Denny's. Yes, we both gained a pound or two; but then you may ask, "Hey, what's up with the title where you announce you lost two ounces?" Let me explain.

On the flight down to Orlando last Friday on JetBlue I asked for a Coke and got a regular 12 ounce can; however today, on the way home the stewardess gave me a 10 ounce can which felt slimmer rght away. My wife ordered a seltzer water, here are the two cans side-by-side:

10 oz coke

JetBlue probably saves a small fortune with the lighter can and I'm not complaining here since the sodas are complimentary, I can always ask for another coke, I'm merely making an observation. If I were paying for a 12 oz. can and getting back something less, then I would be complaining.

I should mention that while a slimmer can is a dead giveaway of less soda, there are some pretty inventive manufacturers out there who can put less stuff in the same size can or bottle without anyone being the wiser. Consider for example, these exact same-sized jars of peanut-butter:

these two jars of peanut butter are the same size but contain different ounces of product
The Jar on the left has a deeper indentation on the bottom and thus contains 1.7 fewer ounces.

So in this case, handling the jar, or looking at it will not immediately give a hint that it's lighter than what you may have purchased before. You have to read the label to tell you've been robbed. And that is what hidden-inflation is - robbery.
