In response to my article Faked Naked Photos of Scarlett Johansson Part II, reader no dhimmi wrote: "I'd love if you could write a movie critique [of the 2013 film Under the Skin]. I did not really get the movie, i guess. Yes, she starts to wonder how it is to be human (spoiler alert) and wants to try, fails, and dies like any human (but because she is different) Still i don't see the point if there's any. Maybe plato's cage [sic cave] narrative?"

As I have written before, although I enjoy discussing movies (see my category Films), I do not write movie reviews, so I won't go into any deep analyses of the film. Let me just say that I stopped watching after about 20 minutes - it was, for me, despite seeing Scarlett's naked body, unbearable.

I am shocked that the film received so many positive reviews from critics, although I have read that it was booed during its first showing at the Venice Film Festival.

Movies, in contrast to literature, should not require me to instigate a deep contemplative investigation of the film's meaning as art - film should only entertain. If a video teaches a lesson, it is propaganda; if it encourages me take or continue to take some action, it is advertising, if it attempts to represent reality, it is a documentary, if it requires deep thought, it supposedly is art. None of these are true movies.

The purpose of movies should not be to preach to me, sell me an idea, or to teach me anything at all. Film should only do one of two things: make me laugh or make me cry, the Catharsis that one should experience after watching a tragedy or comedy in ancient Greece. Under The Skin neither made me laugh nor cry - it made me yawn.
