Islamic clerics have to be certified by local Chinese authorities that their political beliefs are not in conflict with Chinese culture, sermons are chosen that do not encourage Jihad, and even which version of the Quran is used is also strictly controlled. And as we know, for good reason. In effect, the Chinese force all Muslims to practise a very narrow, cleaned-up, state-controlled version of Islam.

I was living in a dorm in the Place Pigalle, the notorious Red Light district of Paris. When I wasn't in school, I would sit in cafes and absorb local color, browse through book stores or museums or catch a movie at the cinema. These usually turned out to be American flicks dubbed in French with English sub-titles.

I was 21 and waiting to board a bus headed toward the only un-drownable lake on earth, the Dead Sea. When I got on, the Arab driver had the radio tuned to station 677 Jordanian Radio transmitting from Ramallah. A woman was singing this most beautiful song in Arabic.
