
When I first heard this joke in 1965 I informed the Israeli that the joke was probably inspired by the story of Sergeant York from the First World War wherein York would cackle "Gobble Gobble!" in order to get enemy Germans to raise their head and then shoot them.

Jokes, in order to be funny, rely on there being some germ of truth in the humor. For example, when jokes mock Jews for being cheap, the germ of truth is that Jews are indeed involved in finance, banking and diamond dealing.
