It happens almost every day: an email or comment arrives from a reader explaining how I misunderstand Islam, that if I just read the Qur'an I would see the beauty of Islam. Then there is this piece of faultless logic: because Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, it must be the "true" religion. Times without number I am told that Islam is in fact a Religion of Peace. What is astounding to most people of intellect is that these poor deluded souls actually believe these things.
I know with absolute certainty that any program that "helps" the poor by taking money from someone else, actually hurts the poor. The Great Depression was a great depression instead of a short recession precisely because our government socialized our economy with measures that spent our monies on feel good projects that did absolutely nothing to improve the situation.
In this video produced by Jordan Flaherty and Lily Keber we are shown one side of the Gaza problem here described by the filmmakers: "After 3 years under siege and a recent Israeli-led offensive, Gaza continues to suffer. No materials for rebuilding are allowed in, and education and industry continue to be stifled. Shot in June 2009, this short film gives a glimpse into the harsh realities of everyday Gaza under siege."
In 1926, an obscure, 24-year old U.S. Air Mail pilot named Charles Lindbergh heard about a $25,000 prize for the first flight between New York and Paris. Lindbergh persuaded a group of St. Louis businessmen to help him build a plane to go after the prize. Modern readers may not realize how dangerous an attempt like this really was: during the first half of 1927 forty pilots attempted various long-distance flights over the ocean which led to twenty-one deaths.
I have written many times that bleeding heart liberals cause more misery and suffering in Africa than all the natural disasters put together. Indeed, if we had all just minded our own business, Nature would have made sure that there were not more than a hundred million Africans around, thus ensuring that only a few thousand would be starving or dying of disease.
Sometimes I get an email from a reader who thinks he needs to point out that only a small, particular, extreme sect of Islam is involved in actual terrorist acts and that all the other denominations of Islam are peaceful and harmless; that it is misguided to blame all of Islam for the crimes of the very, very few.
When my brother Pete was 9 years old he and his friend Bobby K. were down by the railroad tracks putting pennies on them to see what would happen when the train rolled over them. As they were lying in wait behind nearby bushes a railroad dick grabbed each of them by the collar and demanded to know where they lived.
I was 20 years old in the fall of 1965 eating dinner in a small restaurant on Rehov Yehoshua Bin-Nun (Joshua Son-of-Nun Street) in Jerusalem, Israel, when a waitress noticed I was reading an English newspaper, so she asked where I was from; I told her New Jersey. Not being familiar with all the cities and states in America, she answered back, "Oh, New Jersey, I have heard of that city."
Although I believe Muslim women should be ashamed to wear the hijab in public, I am opposed to violence against them. Hopefully all of Europe will find the courage to ban the hijab. Some readers may not understand the difference between banning the burqa and Sudan's law against wearing pants. Here's the difference: the burqa is a symbol of Muslim women's subjugation by men, pants are a symbol of Muslim women's liberation from men.
